Erzin earthquake victims demand solution as housing project on disputed land is suspended
A housing project planned to be built on a pasture area for earthquake victims in Erzin district of Hatay was suspended after the tenant obtained a stay of execution. The earthquake victims demanded that the houses be built on the pasture area belonging to the village as soon as possible. 120 households from Kuyuluk and Kızlarçayı neighborhoods in Erzin were damaged in the earthquake on February 6. The 246-acre pasture area belonging to the neighborhood was leased a few years ago. After the earthquake, it was decided to build houses for earthquake victims in such areas. The ground survey of the area was carried out by AFAD officials and then the lease of the pasture tenant was unilaterally terminated by the Hatay Governorship. However, when the tenant of the pasture area applied to the court and obtained a stay of execution, the planned housing project was suspended. Earthquake victims from Kuyuluk and Kızlarçayı neighborhoods held a press conference on the issue. Dede Boztaş, 90, said that the pasture was a village pasture area and that housing should be built for earthquake victims as soon as possible without causing any harm.
