In Scotland's capital Edinburgh, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival hosting different plays from five continents worldwide, will baize a trail this year. A theatre crew from Turkey,
"Hayal Perdesi" will set to stage French play writer Boris Vian's "Emprire's Builder" in Turkish language (under the title "İmparatorluk Kuranlar Yahut Şümürz"), with English surtitles.
Selin İşcan, art director and leading actress of the play said "Performing in these events give the same feeling as taking part of the Cannes Festival. For us, this feels like touching our dreams" reminding that their premier was held in 19th Istanbul Theatre Festival and joined the Skopje Theatre Festival.
According to İşcan, the team is highly assertive about the festival, after having achieved to be awarded in three categories with this particular play, including the highly respected theatre award of 'Afife Jale' for best director.
"49 countries will participate to this festival having been held since 1947. On behalf of Turkey, we will be attending. Along with our awarded director, I have received the best actress award, and we have gained the best production award. Reviews among Turkey are very positive. We are, in some way, selected for this festival" added the artist.
The crew has been on stages since 2012 and this production is their first and international play. But what is the style of "Empirer's Builder"?
According to İşcan, this is a theatre of the absurd. "A family is in the center of the play; this family hear mysterious sounds, thus fear and flee. But they do not know why they run away. A character called 'Şümürz', the role I play, is an entity that appears every time they move to another place. However the family do not recognize this creature, and even commit violence to it. But they lose something every time they fear, including their memories, relatives, furniture, objects…
This participation of the crew is a first for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well, since for the first time a play will be staged in Turkish language.
"We had a call from the festival today. They shared that they are very excited because a Turkish theatre will be visiting the festival" said İşcan.
