Excavations Come To End After Grant Runs Short At Cyzicus Site

In Cyzicus Ancient Site in Erdek district fo Balıkesir, the 10th round of excavation works to unearth the 2,500-year-old history has been halted after 34 days, due to lack of further grant. Within the excavations, reliefs, architectural ornamentals, figures of humans and eagles, pieces of ceramics have been brought to light, along with a bulk storage known as Pithos, and two wells where marble artefacts had been burned to produce lime, explained Head of excavation works Professor Nurettin Koçhan, from Erzurum Ataturk University. The excavation works were expected to last, in fact, until September 20, with support of a grant of 130,000 liras allocated by Ministry of Tourisme and Culture. The team consisted of two PhD candidates, a research assistant, two masters students, two archaeologists, one epighraph, 16 studens and 17 workers along with workers assigned by the Municipality and Governorate.

A unique statue head in 2.5 meters height and 2 meters in diameter, an artefact dating back to Roman era, has been also excavated in ancient site of Cyzicus, within 10-year-old works.
