THE PRESS COUNCIL DEMANDS THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF TRT CORRESPONDENT METIN TURAN WHO WAS DETAINED IN EGYPT
Pınar Türenç, the Chair of the Press Council in Turkey, stated that the detainment period of Metin Turan, Turkish journalist and TRT correspondent who was taken under custody in Egypt 4 days ago to be extended for another 15 days cannot be accepted.
In her call issued to the national and international press organisations and the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Türenç further stated that they were informed that journalist Metin Turan was in a severely negative health condition and he needed to be handed over to Turkey urgently to be treated at a hospital facility with full capacity.
The statement by Pınar Türenç, the Chair of the Press Council is as follows:
"We learnt that TRT correspondent MetinTuran who was detained in Cairo during the incidents in Egypt and severely beaten by the security forces at the incident site was being kept in the infirmary of Tora prison since the last 4 days. The detainment period of Metin Turan who was taken to interrogation again the other day despite his heavy wounds and injury is now extended for another 15 days. We were informed and learnt with deep grief that the reason for the extension was not the interrogation procedure itself but the need for time for his heavy wounds to be healed. We received the information that the journalist would be released after the treatment of his wounds. The only relief in the matter is that he is not under the risk of losing his life. We now demand that the injured Turkish journalist who got detained as he was performing his profession of journalism to be handed over to the Turkish authorities to be taken back to Turkey for treatment."
